What is a Doula?

A doula is a trained professional that provides support to childbearing women. The term "doula" means to mother the mother or servant to the mother. A birth doula provides support specifically during the prenatal and birthing period as well as the immediate postpartum period. The doula provides physical, emotional and informational support and is skilled in the various comfort measures than can be helpful during labor and delivery and directly after the birth. She can also assist with the first breastfeeding experience. A doula does not replace the birth partner but is there as a support to the partner so that they can love and encourage the laboring woman.
